our people Christine Winter Details:

Christine specialises in employers' and public liability claims as well as road traffic cases. She qualified as a Solicitor in 1981 and has spent her career in defendant insurance work. She joined Greenwoods in 2005, having spent almost the whole of her career in the northwest of England. She has also prosecuted for the Northwest Traffic Area and has represented the Greater Manchester Police on judicial reviews of applications for firearms licences.

Although she has taken several cases to the Court of Appeal, the case which attracted the most publicity was the first successfully defended case for passive smoking in the United Kingdom: Sparrow v St Andrews Homes in which insurers successfully repudiated a claim for passive smoking which would have been the first of its kind in the country.

Notable cases include:

Bence v Fasson - Product liability claim in which Court of Appeal agreed the claimant would not have recovered damages for areas where there was no actual loss, albeit the product was defective.

Rose v Federated Insurance – Duty of utmost good faith in preparing application for insurance.

Shaw v The National Trust – No liability on The National Trust when claimant fell from cliff on National Trust property.

Sparrow v St Andrews Homes – No case proved for passive smoking.

Hobbies include ski-ing, golf and travel.
